A heartfelt message from Margaret Oster.
In the year of January 18, 2000, my 15 year old daughter, Karen Ferreira, was killed
by a drugged driver, and my 17 year old son, Doug Ferreira was severely injured.
My life was turned upside down, inside and out.
The pain of losing my only daughter was unbearable as I struggled to find something meaningful enough to mend my broken heart.
I am an Artist, but grief took every ounce of creativity from my soul.
I became very involved in substance abuse prevention for the past 11 years,
until one day I asked myself a few soul searching questions.
"Who am I?" "Why can't I find joy in anything?" "What's missing in my life besides Karen?"
The answers were there all along, and that was the courage to start painting again.
I had to get over the guilt I felt for surviving my daughter and had to really
evolve myself spiritually, by learning how to forgive the man who took my little girl's life from me, so I could find comfort and joy in art once again.
Art and my faith in God helped me become what I am today.
I truly believe that it helped me discover underlying feelings and thoughts that I express in my artwork.
My heart is still broken, but I find immense joy in painting and can actually feel my daughter smiling down at me urging me to share with
you the baby steps I took to emotionally recover from my ordeal.
With Impact DWI's Executive Director, Dick Roth's consent, I decided to create this program where
I can combine substance abuse prevention and empower young people to use all forms of art as an expression gateway rather than use Alcohol and Drugs.
